FAQ’s: RENTALS
Can I make a reservation for all types of rental equipment?
While reservations are available for most of our equipment, due to limited availability of some products not all our equipment can be reserved online. If you do not see the equipment you are interested in on the list of available options on our website, please call us to discuss availability, 212-260-0400 or email us at nyc@bikeandroll.com. Please note, that we take reservations online for half-day (morning pick-up only) and full-day rentals only. If you wish to rent for multiple days, a week or a month, please call our office.
Where can I ride in New York City?
The Hudson River Greenway is a path for pedestrians & cyclists only. It spans the entire length of Manhattan and is a wonderful way to see the river and the cityscape. Central Park is also a great place to ride; the roads are closed to motor vehicles most of the time, putting cyclists at ease. Crossing over one of New York’s many bridges is a fantastic experience as well. Maps are complimentary at each of our locations.
Can I drop my bike off at a location other than the one I rented from?
Yes. We have a city-wide network! Comfort bikes, kids’ equipment, performance bikes and race bikes can be dropped off at another Bike and Roll location for a fee of $5/person. Governors Island is the exception – we cannot accept drop-offs from other locations there and bikes from Governors Island cannot leave the Island.
What if my rental bike gets stolen or damaged?
In a city so large, theft is occasionally an issue. We offer optional a Damage and Theft Plan for $3 per bike per day ($9 for race bikes). This Damage and Theft Plan covers 100% of any damage that may happen to the bike. It also covers 100% of minor theft (i.e. seat, wheel). If the entire bike is stolen and you have purchased the Damage and Theft Plan, there is a $100 deductible, which is better than paying full-price for the bike ($300+); please note that this circumstance is extremely rare if you lock your bike properly. All damaged or stolen equipment must be paid for out-of-pocket if Damage and Theft Plan is not purchased by the time of check-in.
Do I need to reserve a rental bike?
Walk-ups are welcome and encouraged for our rental bikes. We take a limited number of reservations and they are for half-day (morning pick-up only) and full-day rentals. All reservations must be finalized the day before you wish to ride. If you’d like to rent for a shorter duration you may do so on a walk-up basis; we have plenty of bikes available and typically do not run out of bikes. For multi-day rentals, please call our office.
What is your cancellation policy for rental reservations?
- If you cancel your original reservation at least 24 hours prior to the rental start time and would like a refund, we will issue a refund less a $5 service fee.
- No refund will be issued for a reservation cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice; instead we will issue a Bike and Roll NYC credit, good for 1 year.
What if it rains?
If the weather is questionable, please call our office in the morning to confirm that we will be open that day. We provide full refunds for reservations that get rained out.
What type of bike should I rent?
We have a wide range of bicycles from cruisers perfect for a leisurely ride along the Hudson River Greenway to road bikes for long distance rides on paved trails and roads. Our most popular bike is a 24-speed comfort bicycle -- a good all-around performer for touring the city.
How does your rental pricing work?
Our rental pricing is very flexible and designed to meet your travel needs. We offer hourly, half-day and full-day rates. We charge by the hour if you rental for 3 hours or less. If you rent for up to 4 hours, the half-day rate applies. If you rent for more than 4 hours and return the bike by closing time, the full-day rate applies.
What’s included in a rental?
With every Bike and Roll NYC bike rental, you'll receive a keyed U-lock, a handlebar bag and/or rack, a local map and a helmet. Flat-fix kits are available upon request for no extra charge. Our knowledgeable staff members provide touring tips, suggest routes and answer any questions you might have.
How do I lock my bike when I want to walk around or go into a store?
We provide you with a keyed U-lock. Bikes should be locked to bike racks or other immoveable objects. To prevent theft, it is important to lock the bike’s frame and not just its wheel. Also, please be sure to remove valuable personal belongings from your handlebar bag if you are planning on leaving your bike unattended.
Do I need to wear a helmet?
Individuals who are 17 and under must wear a helmet while riding one of our bicycles; we strongly recommend that all of our participants wear a helmet. In the case of an accident, wearing a properly fitted helmet reduces head injuries by 85%.
FAQ’s: TOURS
What is your cancellation policy for tours?
- If you cancel your original reservation at least 24 hours prior to the tour start time and would like a refund, we will issue a refund less a $5 service fee.
- No refund will be issued for a reservation cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice; instead we will issue a Bike and Roll NYC credit, good for 1 year.
What if it rains?
- We reserve the right to cancel any tour for unfavorable weather or other reasons. If the tour is cancelled and you are unable to make any of the rescheduled tours, we will issue a full refund for the cancelled tour.
- If the weather is questionable, please call one hour prior to the start time to confirm the tour status.
Is a guided tour for me?
Our bike tours provide great introductions to NYC and are a fun, interactive way to sightsee. The tours go to popular sites, such as Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge, as well as some that you’re learning about for the first time. Your tour guide will provide you with fun facts, ranging from history to movie trivia. The tours have a maximum of 15 people at a time and are completed at a relaxing pace. You don’t need to be an avid cyclist to tour with us! If you would like more flexibility in what you see and where you go, you might consider booking a private tour or renting a bike and exploring on your own.
Can I bring my kids on the tour?
Yes, and we recommend that you do! By law, all participants must be at least 12 months old to be on a bicycle (or attachment). We have individual bikes for children 4’4” and taller; toddlers and smaller children can ride in a trailer carrier, baby seat, or on a tagalong – all of which attach to the backs of adult bikes. Our Central Park Loop tour covers 5.5 miles and is great for families with children of all ages and abilities. Our Greenway & Central Park tour is 9-10 miles and may be better for families whose children have stronger riding skills. Our Brooklyn Bridge Neighborhoods and Brooklyn Bridge & Hudson River tours are not recommended for riders ages 12 and under as some street riding is involved.
How safe are the tours?
Safety is our number one priority. Each tour begins with a safety and bike usage talk. The tour routes take place on dedicated bike paths and lanes. We provide helmets, which all tour participants must wear, regardless of age or experience.
How do I check for tour availability and make a reservation?
You can check availability and make a tour reservation online. We will ask for the names of all participants and their approximate heights so we may fit each rider with the appropriate size bike. Walk-ups are welcome if space is available. Tours fill quickly and reservations are strongly recommended. Click here to check availability and make reservations now.
What is provided and what do I need to bring?
The cost of the tour includes a comfort bike, helmet, a bottle of water, and a guide to lead you. You might want to bring a camera since you’ll find lots of photo opportunities on tour. We advise that you wear seasonally appropriate clothing (not too loose) and closed-toe shoes.
When do I need to arrive for my tour?
- Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your tour start time (20 minutes prior if you have booked children’s equipment).
- Participants arriving after the tour departure time risk forfeiture of their tour seats.
What if I need to reschedule my reservation?
If you would like to reschedule your reservation, you may do so any time before your tour start
time; rescheduled reservations are dependent on availability.
Is it appropriate to tip my guide?
Gratuities are not included in our tour prices and are greatly appreciated, although not mandatory. If you enjoyed your experience on tour, our guides will happily accept tips for a job well done.
I’m interested in a private tour – how do I make a reservation?
We do offer private group tours for groups of 10 or more with advanced notice. Please call our office to speak to our group coordinator.
